The #YoungITATalks series is designed for education, conversation and sharing knowledge and experiences among young practitioners.

This panel will discuss the developments in investment arbitration and inter-State arbitration in the Middle East: What are the recent developments and key cases involving parties from the Middle East? What unique challenges arise in investment and inter-state arbitrations involving Arab civil codes? Is the ‘backlash’ against investment arbitration also visible in the Middle East?

Panel II – The Future of International Arbitration: Discussion of the 2018 QMUL Survey and Beyond

This panel will focus on the findings of the 2018 Queen Mary University of London International Arbitration Survey. The latest Survey entitled “The Evolution of International Arbitration” identifies the principal drivers and stakeholders that the arbitration community expects to influence the future direction of international arbitration. After first introducing the results of the survey pertaining to the future evolution of international arbitration, the panelists will then discuss the survey results in context of the Middle East, including the following:

  1. whether the survey’s prediction that arbitration is likely to increase in Energy, Construction/Infrastructure, Technology, and Finance will ring true in the Middle East;
  2. whether, as the survey predicts, international arbitration will be used more often in the future to resolve investor-state disputes;
  3. whether users, law firms, institutions, or other actors will be the drivers of changes in international arbitration in the region; and
  4. which other improvements/innovations can make international arbitration more attractive in the Middle East?
